Terrassa Jazz Festival
2016
The Terrassa Jazz Festival, a yearly event near Barcelona, takes place across multiple venues throughout the town, featuring an array of performances to suit every taste. In addition to the music, the festival also includes a variety of parallel events such as exhibitions, temporary installations, conferences, and art displays.
This project draws inspiration from the origins of jazz, a musical genre that emerged from the toil of African American communities in North America's slave fields. These individuals, brought from Africa and the West Indies as enslaved laborers on plantations, endured immense suffering and hardship. Jazz became intertwined with their experiences, evoking memories of their roots and serving as a coping mechanism amidst the daily tribulations they faced.
The core concept of this project lies in a pivotal moment when an artist, through their performance of a song, embraces their ancestral heritage. The music saturates everything with the atmosphere and culture of their African homeland. The project aims to capture an essence of that profound experience. By exposing it to light, it casts a shadow that spreads these "hidden roots" across the façade. This symbolic imagery represents the dissemination of African culture achieved by the artist through their music.
